Overview
The Immigration Department of Malaysia (JIM) has innovated in managing expatriate entry by allowing Long-Term Pass holders to use the Autogate facility, which was previously only available to Malaysian citizens. This initiative, announced on 29 November 2022, represents a significant step forward in streamlining immigration processes for expatriates living and working in Malaysia.
The Autogate system uses advanced biometric technology to verify travelers quickly and securely, allowing eligible long-term pass holders to bypass manual immigration counters. This results in significantly faster processing times when entering or exiting Malaysia through major international airports.
This facility is a game-changer for expatriates who frequently travel in and out of Malaysia for business or personal reasons. By utilizing the Autogate system, eligible pass holders can enjoy the same convenience as Malaysian citizens, reducing wait times from potentially hours to just minutes.
Eligibility Criteria
To use the Autogate facility, expatriates must meet the following criteria established by the Immigration Department of Malaysia:
ICAO-Compliant E-Passport
Hold a passport that contains a digital chip and complies with the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Most modern passports issued after 2010 contain this biometric chip, indicated by a small gold chip symbol on the passport cover.
Valid Long-Term Pass
Hold a valid Long-Term Pass issued by the Immigration Department of Malaysia. The pass must be currently active and not expired. Expatriates who have been issued a Long-Term Pass can continue to use the Autogate facility without the need for any separate registration process.
No Registration Required
Unlike some other countries that require separate enrollment for automated immigration systems, Malaysia's Autogate facility for long-term pass holders does not require any pre-registration. Simply approach the Autogate lane with your valid passport and pass.
Eligible Long-Term Passes
The following Long-Term Passes are permitted to use the Autogate facility at Malaysian international entry points:
Important: Expatriates who do not meet the above criteria or hold a Short-Term Social Visit Pass must continue to use the manual Immigration counter service.
How to Use Autogate
Using the Autogate facility is straightforward. Follow these simple steps for a seamless immigration clearance experience:
Locate the Autogate Lane
Look for the designated Autogate lanes at immigration checkpoints. These are usually clearly marked and separate from manual counter queues. At KLIA and KLIA2, Autogate lanes are available at both arrival and departure halls.
Scan Your Passport
Open your passport to the photo page and place it face-down on the scanner. The system will read the biometric chip in your passport. Wait for the first gate to open before proceeding.
Biometric Verification
Look at the camera for facial recognition verification. Remove any hats, glasses, or face coverings that might obstruct the camera. The system will match your face with the photo stored in your passport chip.
Exit Through Second Gate
Once verified, the second gate will open automatically. Collect your passport and proceed through. The entire process typically takes less than 30 seconds.
